I’ve been doing these quick little K-pop catch up posts because I feel a bit behind. I’m not sure what’s really new and who to look out for. I’ve done my catch up on boy bands but now I’m let with the girl groups! So QUICK! To the search bar for answers!
Girls’ Generation-TaeTiSeo
Does this count? I don’t know. They’re not necessarily “new” since these are some familiar faces in K-Pop but they are a new sub-group so here’s what I’ve caught up on. I’ve found their music video for their song “Twinkle.” It’s a fun, upbeat, and modern take on the 1950’s fashion and fame with a 1970’s funky beat. Mixing the times gets bit confusing but it’s still overall fun.
Rainbow Pixie
More sub-groups! I had a feeling as soon as I read the group name, it was a sub-group of the already established Rainbow. Also, it’s yet another trio of girls. Watching their music video “Hoi Hoi,” I automatically thought of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” It’s kinda nonsensical and girls messing around with makeup and clothes just having a good time. Personally, I’m not quick feeling this song or video but that’s just me. I’m just not getting it but I’m sure there are people who got the “Hoi hoi hoi!” part stuck in their head.
Six Bomb
An actual new group! I went to go check their music video “Chiki Chiki Bomb…” What does that even mean? All that aside, these girls have a seizure inducing video. A ton of costume changes, flashing colors, dancing on top of text, crazy hair, and suddenly they become Ah-ha with getting themselves drawn out with some text introducing each of the members. I wasn’t really feeling their energy… or lack thereof but maybe they can prove me wrong in the end.
SPICA
I’m really feeling these girls after listening to their song, Russian Roulette. No bubblegum pop voices and these girls are playing Russian Roulette for goodness sake. It’s a tougher image, which I guess appeals to me more. I like their costumes and the set. It’s a really good video. I don’t have too many complaints. It’s a very straight forward video. I’m hoping for more hits for these girls!
EXID
I checked out their video “Whoz That Girl.” I cringed at “whoz” but I’ll let that slide as a major problem. The biggest complaint is their acting. They weren’t good at mouthing their own song, they didn’t have believable revenge faces and it was just bland. I’m sure with more experience they’ll be better but hey, it’s their first time and I guess that’s where they need to work on. Also, rhyming “girl” with “girl” is another one of those cringing problems.
Hello Venus
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s Hello Venus coming to the aid of pretty boys in their video “Venus!” Cute girls, crazy colors, outdoor party, this video screams of adorable. The rapper though has a surprisingly low voice but I have no problems with that. I’m curious if this group can pull off another image but we’ll see in the future.
Gangkiz
I had some song options here while picking which video to watch. I went with “Mama” because I don’t have a high attention span and I can’t really sit through 7:30 minutes of “Honey Honey” wondering where the music went. Now, I’m a HUGE sucker for whistling. Already, this caught my attention. I like their sexy image in tight, black suits. Although they make me feel out of shape, I was waiting for something a little more than dancing in a giant white room and changing outfits every 3 seconds.
And there’s my quick recap of some new girl groups in K-pop! I’m a bit pickier with girl groups since they’re not really my thing so keep in mind that my views are a little more harsh (I don’t mean to be)! Be sure to keep on the look out for more K-pop girl groups in the future!
