Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is a new and promising TV anime series that premiered on the Fuji TV in Japan on July 9th 2009. The story was written by Natsuko Takahashi and is directed by Masaki Tachibana. It is an original story based heavily upon the hypothesis that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake will occur in Japan within the next thirty years. [hidepost]
Only two episodes have been aired in Japan as of yet. The series follows a middle school girl named Mirai who is like many pre-teens and teenagers, apathetic and indifferent to school, her family, and pretty much life in general. This attitude seems to have been picked up from her parents, who seem more concerned with going through the motions rather than enjoying their time together; even forgetting and barely celebrating Mirai’s mother’s birthday.
The next day, with the hopes of reuniting the family into happier times, Mirai’s brother Yuki asks his mother to take them to a robot exhibition in Odaiba. Having to work, the siblings’ mother tells Mirai to take her brother. After a seemingly happy day at the exhibition, Mirai wanders outside while her brother is in the bathroom, and begins to complain about life into her cell phone which seems to be never to far from Mirai’s fingers. In her angst she writes that she wants the world to break. As soon as she hits send, the ground around her begins to rumble and everything around her starts to shatter.
After only one episode I am already hooked on the series. The animation is incredibly smooth, and I believe some CGI was used for the earthquake sequence. I started to watch the second episode in Japanese, and watched Mirai run into the building looking for Yuki after the earthquake was over, then heard myself scream “NO THE AFTERSCHOCKS!” I’m dying to know how this series will end because there are still so many questions that need answers. Where is Yuki and is he still alive? What about their parents? How are Mirai’s friends in Japan and how are the ones were planning on traveling abroad for summer vacation?” I absolutely and eagerly recommend this series to everyone, and I will be scouring the internet for subbed episodes.
