07-ghost07 Ghost is a new TV anime series that aired on April 7th 2009 through Studio Deen. The show is directed by Norihiro Takamoto and is categorized as a fantasy drama. It is based of the hit manga created by Yuki Amemiya (story) and Yukino Ichihara (art) that shares the same name as the anime. Thirteen episodes have aired so far, and it is still a currently ongoing series.

The story revolves around a young man named Teito Klein who is a gifted student at the Barsburg Empire Military Academy. Teito suffers from amnesia and remembers nothing about his youth; in fact, what he does learn about his past comes from his reoccurring and traumatizing dreams. After only one year at this special academy that only accepts those with a rare zaiphon ability, Teito and his best friend Mikage take and pass the infamously difficult graduation exam. However, the next day while Teito was on an errand for a teacher, he over hears a man say his name. While eavesdropping, he realizes the speaker is a man named Ayanami, the general of the Black Hawks, and the man who killed Teito’s father in his dreams.

After being discovered, Teito attempts to take revenge on Ayanami, but is easily thwarted by one of his subsidiary soldiers and sent to prison. With the help of Mikage, Teito is able to escape his prison. However, in the final moments of his escape, Teito is injured by Ayanami’s zaiphon attack. Teito is discovered by a bishop and is taken to a church for healing and sanctuary where he learns more about his past than ever before.

I was very excited what I first saw this series. Although I had never read the manga, I had heard nothing but good things about it. However, when I began watching the anime I found myself becoming frustrated. The animation is done beautifully and the story proposed is interesting and thought provoking, but there are a few too many yaoi (boy on boy action) moments for what seems like a very serious storyline. It also bothers me that there seems to be only one character over the age of twenty-five, and very few female characters, none of which are main characters. I assume many a yaoi fan girl will take one look at the male characters in this series and wonder…“Sasuke who?” Further episodes in the series explore the idea of human wants and what people are willing to put in to obtain their innermost desire. 07 Ghost has similar traits to other dramatic series including memory loss, revenge, and the ever-changing relationships of friends and enemies, but the writers are able to take these themes and provide a unique spin on them to keep the audience interested. Overall, I am looking forward to watching more of this series, but if you are looking for a more serious anime this may not be the one for you.
