Exclusive Interview with CHEMISTRY

Posted by Lara Visconti On August - 20 - 2011View Comments

Our experience at Otakon wouldn’t have been as fun if it weren’t for this group. CHEMISTRY, a two member group comprising of Yoshikuni Dōchin and Kaname Kawabata, has been around since 2001 and is celebrating their 10 year anniversary together. Brought together by a talent search show called Asayan, this duo has had nothing but successes all through their decade together. It was a pleasure sitting down with them and getting to know the duo and asking them about their first live in the US together.

We’d like to give a big thank you to Sony Music Japan and the staff at Otakon 2011 for this great opportunity!

SECRET is out in Japan!

The Korean wave is still in full force out in Japan and continues with SECRET stepping in showing their stuff. Today the 4-member girl group held a special showcase at the Harajuku Laforet Museum. Hundreds of enthusiastic fans lined the staircase with colorful signs in hand ready to cheer.

SECRET opened up with their hit Korean single “Magic” and sang other songs such as, “Lalala,” “Empty with you.” Nishio Hidetaka of X-GUN also made an appearance and held a special talk with the girls. He asked which places they would like to visit to in Japan to which they responded Disneyland. They also enjoyed the large Japanese department Donki Hodei. Member Sunhwa wanted to find the right words to express her feelings to the fans so she even pulled out her Japanese text book to tell them all how wonderful everyone was.credit: SONY MUSIC

SECRET closed with the Japanese version of their hit song “Madonna” which is set to be released in Japan on August 3rd this year.

From what I have heard,  SECRET has come a long way. The girls got really emotional on stage. They talked about how happy they were to have performed today and that they will never forget the feeling. I wish them luck!

Green Boys Project for Japan!

Posted by Jessica Dawson On May - 5 - 2011View Comments

Popular Japanese group GReeeeN along with their producer JIN, have come up with new project called “Green Boys” in order to bring awareness to the people still struggling in Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The members of GReeeeN live in Fukushima and have also been effected by the events of March 11th. While they have songs that have been downloaded over 36 million times in Japan alone, the group also have jobs as dentists and have been helping to identify victims of this tragedy through dental records.

GReeeeN has composed a new song called “Green Boys” and has placed it up as a free download at the official website. The song is meant to bring positive spirits to everyone who listens to it. There is also a video with a translation of the lyrics in several languages so check it out.

There is also a chance to be in the official music video. For more information about the Green Boys project in English visit www.reverbnation.com/greenboysproject

GReeeeN is personally one of my favorite groups ever. I started to tear up when I heard the song and they really went all out by providing all this information in several different languages. Even though its been almost 2 months Japan still needs a lot of help. If you haven’t donated already please do and please continue to show your support!

It seems like as if overnight hip-hop/rap group Far East Movement blew up with popularity. With songs like “Like a G6″ and “Girls on the Dancefloor,” it was almost a given that they would become highly successful.

Recently, Idolator got their hands on the original demo for Far East Movement’s hit song “Rocketeer” featuring Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic… but Ryan Tedder isn’t on this track. It’s the co-writter and co-producer of the song, Grammy winner Bruno Mars!

The song embodies a whole different feel when heard with Bruno Mars. It’s something that can’t be compared with Ryan Tedder. Both musicians are extremely talented in their own right and this version just begs to be listened to.

Otakon 2011 Musical Guest Revealed!

Posted by Lara Visconti On April - 14 - 2011View Comments

For those of you who may know, May Pang’s AMIN attended Otakon 2010 last year and hung out with fans and musical guests. It’s 2011 and Otakon 2011 is coming in a few months. Who’s the musical guest this year? It’s none other then Japanese R&B duo CHEMISTRY and dance group SYNERGY!

Here’s an excerpt from the press release from Otakorp:

Baltimore, MD (April 14, 2011) – CHEMISTRY, with an amazing six #1 albums on the Oricon National Charts, along with 4 person dance group Synergy are making their U.S. debut this summer at Otakon 2011 July 29-31 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore MD. Recent anime songs by CHEMISTRY include “Period” for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and “merry-go-round” in the recent OVA of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
CHEMISTRY is a Japanese R&B duo, composed of, Yoshikuni Dōchin and Kaname Kawabata. After winning the Asayan audition in 2000 which was organized by Sony Music Entertainment Japan, they debuted in 2001 with three #1 singles (“Pieces of Dreams,” “Point of No Return,” and “You Go Your Way”) and a #1 album (The Way We Are).
In June 2002, CHEMISTRY participated in “Voices of KOREA/JAPAN,” a Korean/Japanese collaboration vocal unit that sang the official theme song of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. They co-recorded the first Korean/Japanese collaboration song entitled “Let’s Get Together Now.” The song, performed at the pre-opening festival of the World Cup held in Korea, was hailed as the first national broadcast of a Japanese language song in Korea since WWII. Their performance at the World Cup opening ceremony was broadcast in 160 countries worldwide.
Not ones to rest on their laurels, CHEMISTRY went on to produce #1 album after #1 album. Hits include songs “Your Name Never Gone” and “Tōkage feat. John Legend.”
In August 2010, CHEMISTRY recorded “a better tomorrow,” the world wide theme song for a Korean remake of the Hong Kong film “A Better Tomorrow” starring Song Seung- Heon.
The year saw the duo building on their successful career within Japan as well as highlights of increasing their presence in the rest of Asia including their endeavor to sing in Korean for the first time and in November, performing at the M-net Asian Music Awards held in Macao, receiving the Best Asian Male Artist award.
Also in 2010, CHEMISTRY worked together with the 4-person dance group Synergy to release “Shawty.” Another joint work of the two groups was released November 3, 2010, titled “Keep Your Love.”
This March, CHEMISTRY released their best of album, “CHEMISTRY 2001-2011,” which commemorates their first decade together as a duo.

Otakon 2011 will be held July 29 – 31 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland

Who else is ridiculously excited about this?! I only got into CHEMISTRY in recent months but their vocals are excellent and I’m in love with their song “Shawty.” Synergy also brings an amazing vibe to the song as it shows a whole new CHEMISTRY as well. Those boys are definitely talented in singing and dancing.

As we all know, Japan is going through one of the worst earthquake/tsunami disasters in history at the moment. Despite all of the turmoil, T.M.Revolution (Takanori Nishikawa), has decided to release the long-awaited music video for “Save the One, Save the All.”

The single itself was released December 1st of last year and was used for the the fourth movie in the anime franchise Bleach.

TMR’s staff tweeted the following:

Now that the music video is finally finished, T.M.Revolution hopes that the victims of the terrible earthquake/tsunami will see this and will hopefully pass on his wish that the victims will hold on to courage and hope.

The video itself is monochrome, just like his last music video for the single “Naked arms.” It seems to stick with a Bleach theme and shows Takanori being bound up in chains (don’t get any freaky ideas). It shows Takanori doing what he does well… dance to his own songs. He even pops his collar towards the end, which is highly amusing to fans such as myself. He even throws in some spins and massive arm movements. It’s a pretty funny music video if you’ve never seen him before.

Review: Akanishi Jin’s New Single “Eternal”

Posted by Lara Visconti On March - 11 - 2011View Comments

It was clearly inevitable that we’d have to review this single, especially after Akanishi Jin took the plunge from KAT-TUN and decided to go solo. So how did he do?

Statistically, Akanishi Jin did great. His single was released last week and has reached #1 on the Oricon weekly charts with 217,000 in sales. He is also the first male artist to break 200,000 sales in the first week since Yusuke’s “Himawari” in March 2009.

Maybe it’s me, but I was totally hoping for some fun beats and talks of something sexually driven when listening to his stuff. Maybe “LOVEJUICE” and “Pinky” have rubbed off on me too much. But deep inside, I knew what I was in for. After all, these songs have already been performed live before… when he was still in KAT-TUN.

As soon as I started playing “Eternal,” better yet, as soon as I heard the title “Eternal,” I knew this song was going to be somewhat meaningful. As it turns out, it’s a ballad and Akanishi Jin and Yamashita Tomohisa (Yamapi) had already performed it as a duet before. It’s obviously very sweet just by listening to it. You don’t even need to understand what he’s singing to get the song. But after reading a translation, you realize that it’s a man singing about his lover and how special she is and how difficult it is to sometimes express his feelings to her. It’s a cute song. Nothing I’d particularly listen to more than a few times. Maybe it just needs time to grow on me.

The second song on this single is 「ムラサキ」 (Purple). Akanishi Jin has actually performed this song years ago when he was still in KAT-TUN so I guess finally releasing it is a good idea. I listened to this song one time through and I couldn’t tell what it was about. After reading the translation and getting a better idea of what the song was about, I didn’t feel that Akanishi expressed this feeling correctly while singing. I do feel his vocal ability has improved but this song wasn’t for him. He reminisces that purple sunset they saw together but he only saw sadness in her face as their relationship crumbled. I didn’t really feel the emotion that should’ve been conveyed in this song as I did in “Eternal.”

Akanishi Jin has also released the music video for “Eternal.” I’m not gonna lie, I hated it. He kinda just walked around emotionless and you can barely see his face under that hood. He also mumbled the lyrics of the song so I couldn’t even tell if he was supposed to look like he was singing or what. Definitely a throw off from what the song is about. Maybe this would’ve made a better video for 「ムラサキ」.
In a nutshell, this single is a release of two songs he never got around to releasing. I guess better late than never.
