Catching up with HOME MADE KAZOKU

Posted by Jessica Dawson On November - 29 - 2010View Comments

Yes! We have another exclusive interview with Japanese hip-hop trio HOME MADE KAZOKU! We decided to catch up with the guys again and see what they’ve been up to since Otakon 2010. If you haven’t checked our previous interview, check here. The group has been very busy with various performances around Japan and they took the time to reply to some of your questions. So let’s start!

Jessica: How have you guys been? MICRO’s birthday just passed. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! How did you celebrate?

MICRO: Lots of people wished me a happy birthday and celebrated in various places. The biggest surprise was a huge cake that the students presented me during the encore at a school festival. I was surprised and so touched, it brought tears to my eyes.

Jessica: You have just released your new single “Nukumori.” Can you tell us a little bit about the song and how it was inspired?

MICRO: At the end of each show in the CIRCLE TOUR, I’d call out, “Let’s all hold hands to make a family circle that can only be made today!” And that felt really good. What is it about holding hands that makes you feel kind and care and respect of the others? The feelings I had then was “nukumori (warmth.)” It’s a very special song that I want everyone to hear, especially now, in these times.

KURO: I felt really moved when we ended the shows and meet & greet sessions in the CIRCLE TOUR by all holding hands. When we tried to put that feeling into a song, it came down to the word “nukumori.” No matter how many tools are invented to connect with people (like Twitter, Mixi, Facebook, etc.) nothing compares to the human touch. The most important thing comes from the heart.

U-ICHI: I felt everyone’s “nukumori” on our last tour.

Jessica: So, is there “Nukumori” hand cream? What’s the deal with that?

MICRO: It’s a promotional item for fun. We want you to be well-groomed when you hold hands!  I’m sure people would be happier to hold hands with someone with soft and supple skin.

KURO: Since your skin tends to get chapped and dry during the winter, we made it to contribute to a happier “hands-on” relationship for touching and holding hands.

U-ICHI: The record company said they wanted to make a promo item, so we thought you should be prepared with this hand cream for when you get a chance to hold hands with that special someone. It’s a little joke!

Jessica: We first met back at Otakon 2010 in Baltimore. Can you now tell us how you felt about that experience? What differences did you see with the American audience?

MICRO: I didn’t find a single difference with the audience when comparing the US and Japan.  There is the obvious difference in the language, but I realized that our thoughts reach the audience if we sing directly to their hearts, from the bottom of our hearts. You know they say, “Music has no borders,” well, I understood the true meaning of that! I can’t wait to perform in the US again.

KURO: I was a little worried about what kind of reaction we would get, but once we started playing we felt the same vibe that we get from the fans in Japan. Our experience at Otakon was very encouraging. I’m really looking forward to performing abroad again.

U-ICHI: It was a life-changing experience! Performing felt so good, I can’t wait to do it again, and I think it went to my head!

Jessica: Is there a particular memory that stands out from your concert/time at Otakon?

MICRO: The fire, maybe? That was unexpected. The thing that surprised me the most was that everyone sang our songs in Japanese. I really felt their love.

KURO: The meet & greet/autograph session after the show that lasted over two hours.

U-ICHI: The crowd’s vibes when we were playing the non-anime songs!! It was awesome.

Jessica: You guys just hosted the your very first KAZOKU FES 10′. Despite the heavy rain that day, how did you feel about the turn out?

MICRO: We had some really serious rain. But thanks to all the people that were soaking wet but stayed to watch until the end, all the artists that kept on singing although their instruments got wet, and all the staff and everybody backstage who took it to the limit to keep it going, we were all incredibly united and it turned out to be an awesome day.

KURO: The rain was almost a kind of production effect that united the performers and audience.  Maybe it was the feeling that we all made it through the rain together. It was really moving. As it was with Woodstock, rain comes with any legendary concert.

U-ICHI: I was really moved. I’m grateful to the performers, audience, and staffs for making it all happen. I was filled with a feeling of accomplishment and a renewed sense of mission.

Jessica: You have worked with a lot of people over the years and this concert was a way to celebrate that friendship with those artist and your fans. Was it hard to pick the artist that performed?

MICRO: That’s true. There were so many more artists that we wanted and it was a difficult decision, but we started by asking those people that we have a personal relationship and are close with or respect and look up to.

KURO: Organizing the bookings was the hardest. We want to ask the people that we couldn’t this year to come next year. The basis of KAZOKU Festival is people that are connected. You get to see sessions here that you can’t see anywhere else.

U-ICHI: I chose people that I respect or personally like. Other than personal preferences, HOME MADE KAZOKU considered the choices as a group.

Jessica: You have fans from all over the world. How do you feel about illegal downloading since some of your CDs do not reach certain countries?

MICRO: I guess it’s the tide of the times. I figure I’ll just have to make an amazing song that people will HAVE to buy!

KURO: You can’t really help it. You can’t stop the tide. I’m happy that at least it helps our songs reach as many people as possible. If they really like us they’ll come to see our shows and I trust that they will buy our CDs in the end.

U-ICHI: I wish they would stop!! It demeans the value.

Jessica: Are you planing to have any more performances abroad anytime soon?

MICRO: We don’t have any plans yet, but if we’re invited, we’d be happy to come anytime!

KURO: There are some plans in the works that have come up in meetings. I’m sure they’ll come together soon. I hope you’ll come see us when we’re there!

U-ICHI: I’d love to go. Europe is attractive too!

Jessica: If you had to describe HMKU as a color, what color would it be?

MICRO: Light purple!

KURO: I think green.

U-ICHI: Rainbow color.

Jessica: All three of you have been put into a body switching machine. What would you do if you had the chance to be another person for a week?

MICRO: I’d become Jay-Z and spend the week recording feature songs with HOME MADE KAZOKU.

KURO: I want to tour the world with Prince. His ideas are always so original. I think his view and approach about the CD media format is interesting too. Now that we’ve lost Michael, I’d like to learn as much as I can by spending time with a living legend.

U-ICHI: Jay-Z.

Seoul Basks in the Glory of the G20 Success

Posted by Emma Kalka On November - 14 - 2010View Comments

For most people around the world, the G20 Seoul Summit was just another economic forum. But for South Korea, it was something much more. It was a chance to finally show the world that it is a country strong enough and worthy enough to be respected by world leadersl.

The event brought together the leaders from the top 20 economies in the world, as well as the heads of the most powerful international financial organizations, to discuss just how they were planning to save the world from another devastating economic crisis. And world leaders consider the results of the summit a success, as they agreed to work together to practice fair trade and put in place preventative measures in case things start going downhill economic-wise in the future. Korean President Lee Myung-bak even contributed two out of the four main topics that were put on the discussion table.

But more than that, the G20 was a huge milestone for South Korea. It was the first time an Asian country and non-G8 country (aka the eighth richest countries in the world) hosted the world event. And it was the biggest thing to come to Seoul since the 2002 World Cup and the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Seoul spent a good year preparing. More English signs had to be put up to accommodate the influx of foreign diplomats and press, the venue had to be picked and prepared, the city ran advertisements and promotions to help show citizens how to be polite to the foreign guests, and most importantly, security needed to be taken care of. With North Korea just an hour away from the capital city, security was on its highest level for the entire week, with check points at all the airports and in and out of the summit area.

And because of the city-wide involvement, Seoul took on a festival-like atmosphere the week of the summit. Even though most of the world leaders wouldn’t arrive until Wednesday or Thursday, people flocked to COEX to see the set-up before it was shut down to the public. A lantern festival was held at Cheonggye Stream featuring lanterns from around the world to celebrate the event.

Of course, when the actual event opened up, everything in southern Seoul was hectic. COEX Mall and Samseong Station, one of the largest malls in Asia and one of the busiest subway stations in the city, were both shut down to provide better protection for the leaders. A 2-kilometer radius surrounding the convention hall was designated a security zone that cars and pedestrians were not allowed to enter.

But now the summit is over and COEX is back to normal. The metal detectors are gone, but the banners remain up, celebrating the success of the first major event involving world leaders  in the country. And South Koreans will not likely forget the G20 Summit anytime soon. With this event, South Korea has moved up on the world stage, to play more of a leadership role. And to a country that laid in ruins just 60 years ago, that is one huge accomplishment.

JYJ Takes Down The Big Apple With Their First Showcase

November 12, 2010 was such a good night for the lovers of Korean Pop. The three members of JYJ, Kim Junsu, Kim JaeJoong, and Park Yoochun performed at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. 7000 fans waited in line and only the lucky 3900 were able to get in. The controversy stemmed from their inability to obtain a working visa, resulting in the performance becoming a ‘free of charge’ event. For those who purchased tickets, they were given refunds as well as priority seating/standing.

Two emcees opened up the show and introduced the band, with fans cheering with excitement. They performed three songs off of their English album “The Beginning.” After, the band was brought back on stage by the emcees for a short Q & A. Some of the questions asked were ‘What was their favorite thing about NYC?’ ‘Do they read all their Twitter messages?’ and the infamous ‘Are you single?’ To answer these questions, Junsu loves the NYC skyline, JaeJoong loves the fact he was on stage at that moment receiving the love from the fans, and Yoochun loves the taxis. They do read their Twitter messages, not all, but they really do try their hardest to read every single one. As for them being single, yes ladies, they are single.

JYJ then graced us with their song ‘Found You’ off of the ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ soundtrack, a drama which Yoochun starred in, the only Korean song performed that night. They performed their title song, ‘Ayyy Girl,’ showing some skinship with their female dancers. Their showcase ended with a remix of “Empty,” leaving the fans wanting more, unfortunately there was no encore.

Although JYJ had a lot of difficulties in the beginning of their US tour, it wasn’t a total bust. They are to perform in two more venues, Las Vegas and LA; both shows being free events. May Pang’s AMIN had a great time at this concert! The emcees of the event have also announced that JYJ are working on their next album! We are eagerly anticipating their upcoming album! We wish JYJ the best of luck on their next stop on their tour!

JYJ’s Visas Denied – US Tour Will Continue

Posted by Lara Visconti On November - 11 - 2010View Comments

It’s been a bumpy ride for JYJ’s attempt at making a US debut. Their Hawaii leg of their US tour had been canceled shortly before their performance. Since then, the boys have been in NYC since the 9th awaiting their NY leg. With rumors of the whole US Tour being canceled earlier today, we are finally given some clarity on what’s going on.

Entitled Entertainment has released an apology and an explanation from JYJ on the situation:

Dear Fans,

As you all know, we have not had it easy in this journey. It seemed as though every step of the way, it became more and more difficult to share our lives’ passion with all of you. Recently we were denied the ability to perform in the US by a rejection of our visa but – the show MUST go on.

In appreciation of all of you being the best fans in the world, we’ve decided to do the US Showcase Tour for FREE. Thank you for all of your loving support and understanding.

Can’t wait to see all of you very soon.

JYJ’s P1 Visas Denied for US Performance

Members decides to pay for showcase themselves to honor their commitment to their fans in the US

11 November 2010 – JYJ has decided to go ahead and perform for their fans in the US despite being denied of their P1 visas. Cjes Management, the management company for JYJ has stated that it is of utmost importance that JYJ keeps their promise to their fans and they have been in New York since the 9th to await the decision only to be given the disappointing news.

According to US lawyers advising the team on the situation, JYJ will still be able to take stage on the condition that the performance is free and they receive no monetary benefit for the performance. Due to the fact that substantial costs has already been incurred by the promoters for production, flights, accommodations, there will still be a financial responsibility to be fulfilled which JYJ has decided to undertake this upon themselves to make the events happen.

Says Cjes Entertainment CEO, Mr Baek Chang Ju, “We are still awaiting the official reason to why their P1 visas have been denied since the band has followed every procedure required and also did their interviews accordingly. We are extremely puzzled by this matter and will continue investigations into it. For now, JYJ’s primary objective is to make sure that fans are still able to catch the showcase. Hence we have decided to step in on all costs associated with putting on the show to make sure that the events go on as planned.”

All venues have been informed on setting up FAQs on how fans can receive a refund on the tickets they bought. In addition, fans who have paid for a ticket will also receive a ticket to the free showcase. The rest of the tickets will be allocated on a first come first serve basis from Ticketmaster.

The refund process will start at 12pm on the 11th November 2010.

It’s quite unfortunate to see such talented boys go through one struggle after another. Their lawsuit against SM Entertainment was bad enough and now this. The band is now patiently waiting for a response as to the reason why their visas were denied.

For those who purchased tickets, go to http://www.entitledent.com/jyj/ and find your city so that a full refund can be made.

May Pang’s AMIN will be at the New York concert to bring to you coverage of this event. We wish the boys the best of luck on the rest of their US Tour.

October 24th was an exciting night! AMIN’s founder and CEO, May Pang, celebrated her 60th birthday at the Gibson Guitar Studios. The studio itself has quite the history. Gibson Guitar Studios is the recording studio used to create Michael Jackson’s 1982 hit Thriller!

Not only was the venue amazing, so were the guests. Guests such as music producer/promoter, Sid Bernstien (famous for helping start the British Invasion by introducing the Beatles), Steve Van Zandt (Little Steven’s Underground on Sirius, The Sopranos and Bruce Springsteen),  Snooky (co-founder along with her sister Tish of hair color cosmetics brand Manic Panic), Ken Dashow (DJ from Q104.3) and JUDAS PRIESTESS members Denise and lead singer  MilitiA, and more!

The writers here at AMIN want to wish our CEO and Boss Lady a wonderful birthday!
