Yang Says Sony is Overreacting

In the latest round of the YG plagiarism dispute, Yang Hyun-suk, head of YG, has finally spoken out about the ordeal through a rather lengthy statement on the YG Entertainment website. [hidepost]

He says he waited to release an official statement because Sony said they were sending the plagiarized pieces to the original composers for analysis and Yang wanted to hear their reactions first.

If the original composers find fault with the songs, then Yang said he has no problem taking things into a courtroom to settle, but until then, he's not worried and YG Entertainment is not "afraid" of the allegations.

Sony ATV only owns about 10 percent of the rights to the original songs, which is why Yang has yet to take their warnings seriously. In the released statement, Yang mentions that he wonders whether Sony ATV is actually able to contact the composers and whether the composers are even interested in the issue.

Yang also went on to say that he trusts the work of his artists, such as G-Dragon, and producers, Teddy and Perry.

Both producers have a considerable amount of experience in the music world and "their image has been dealt a severe blow with these latest plagiarism allegations," according to Yang.

The statement also brings up the case of the 30-second preview of Mariah Carey's latest single "Standing O," which Yang claims has 8 bars or 24 seconds of similarities to 2NE1's "In the Club" which was released three months prior to Carey's song. He says this is more than the two bars or five seconds of similarities in G-Dragon's "Butterfly" to Oasis' "She's Electric."

"What is Sony ATV's opinion towards this song?" he said. "I am sure that you can't easily say that Mariah Carey has plagiarized 2NE1's song that was released three months ago, although it contains longer and clearer motives from 'In the Club.'" (Having heard the 30 sec preview... I do have to concur that the intro is almost an exact copy...)

So, what exactly does Yang mean by all this? Sounds to me like he's calling Sony a bully. And what does this all mean for YG Entertainment? Who knows. At this point I don't even know which side to take. Let's just hope it all gets settled by the time G-Dragon does his first solo concert in Seoul the first week of December. [/hidepost]

I want to hear this clip of Mariah Carey's song. If she plagirized "In the Club", then that would be such a one-up on Sony.
