Flying High with Superfly

Posted by Jessica Dawson On September - 24 - 2009

Box EmotionsAdvertisements are indeed put up for a reason and they seem to get my attention. Everywhere on the trains in Tokyo there is a poster or two for the artist Superfly and her latest album "Box Emotion." [hidepost] Superfly (Shiho Ochi) has a rock and blues feel to her music, which is definitely different from the main stream J-pop that seems to be over take the Oricon charts most of the time. On September 2nd, "Box Emotions" debuted at #1 on the charts. Even now the album is sitting comfortably on the top 10 list next to AI and Arashi.

Check out the music videos for  "Alright!!"  and  "Yashashii Kimochi de," both hot singles from the new album!

She definately can belt it in "Alright" but the 70's image didn't so it for me.

All the adds are rather eye catching! They also have been up for a long time, probably because she's at the top of the charts. Even the Men's Nonno with the Fog Bar boys has been changed, but not Superfly.

Her voice is definitely a lot stronger than I thought it would be. I wonder if she's mixed? She looks like she could be.
I like "Alright!!" But I agree, the whole 70's thing is not my taste, and I personally don't really think that it suits the image of the song so much, since it's more of a hippie type feeling, which doesn't match with the edgy rocker tune of the song.
It's kinda anthem-like though. Could be in a drama.

"Yasashii Kimochi de" was alright, but I felt like the guitars and music in the background were kind of overpowering her voice, and then in the chorus, the two started competing a bit. Great voice though.

Would I turn off the radio if a song of hers came on? No.
Will I get her CD? Probably not.
I still enjoy the advertisements though. :D
