The new drama, Otomen, has just begun airing in Japan this past August 1st! This has been a long awaited drama since it’s based off of the manga with the same title. Why is this manga so popular? For it’s hilarious storyline, of course!
Created by manga author Aya Kanno, Otomen focuses on the oh-so masculine Asuka Masamune. Askuka is multi-talented. He is an expert in judo, karate, and is captain of the kendo team. He has tons of girls swooning over him every time he walks by. But what many people don’t know is his deepest secret: Asuka is an Otomen. He enjoys everything cute such as stuffed animals, sewing, baking, shoujo manga, and cheesy romance novels! Otomen comes from the pun between the Japanese word “otome,” which means “young lady” or “mistress” and the English word “men,” which I’m sure we’re all familiar with. One day, a new girl, Miyakozuka Ryo, transfers to the school and Asuka falls in love. Problem? She loves everything manly! She can’t cook, sew, or do anything of that sort. She’s a great fighter, most likely due to the face her father is a police officer and martial artist.
I’ve already read some of the original manga, which is currently available in English and is released by Viz Media. Anyone who loves a good laugh should read it! The new drama adaption stars Okada Masaki as Asuka Masamune. He is an excellent choice for the role. He plays the part of Asuka well. I have high expectations for this drama! Keep watching!
