Big Bang Hits a Different Kind of Stage

shouting2Two members of top K-pop boy band, Big Bang are broadening their horizons and trying their luck out on a new kind of stage.

Dae-sung and Seung-ri recently announced to Korean press that they will both star in a new jukebox musical called “Shouting” which will open in August. The show is an autobiographical piece about two guys who fight to make their dream of being singers come true, even though they face challenges at every turn.

Both singers are no stranger to theater. Seung-ri acted as the lead in the show “Sonagi,” based off a popular novel and Dae-sung had a part in the Korean adaption of “Cats“. Both are nervous about the show and said that they wish to improve their acting skills for their fans.

“I feel a little burdened as far as my singing and acting goes, since this will be a big-scale show, but I will do my best,” Seung-ri said at a recent press conference.

Dae-sung made a similar promise at the conference, saying that while all he did was sing and dance for his role as Rum Tum Tuger in “Cats,” he will use this opportunity to improve his acting.

The musical, which is aimed at Big Bang fans and teenage audiences, will feature songs by Big Bang, including “Sunset Glow” and other songs written specifically for the show. A spokesperson from Seol & Company, who co-produced the show with YG Entertainment, said in a recent press release that they were trying to reach a new niche market in theater-goers, who nowadays are mostly in their 20s and 30s. They also hope to nurture a new kind of musical fan by aiming at younger audiences.

Actors Hong Ji-min and Joo Won-sung, both musical theater actors, will be in the show and other Big Bang members have cameos planned for the show’s run from Aug. 12 to 23.
