Swallow the SunA new drama recently launched on Korean channel SBS has created quite the buzz in the Korean drama scene. “Swallow the Sun,” made by the creators of the hit drama “All In,” (starring Lee Byung-hun and Song Hye-kyo) producer Yoo Chul-young and writer Choi Wan-kyu, takes viewers from the beautiful Jeju Island, to the sinful Las Vegas, to the exotic South Africa and back.

This is the second and a highly anticipated collaboration of the two and many fans have begun calling the drama “All In 2.”

The story centers around the three main characters: Jung-woo, played by Ji Sung from “New Heart” (2007); Su-hyun, former Fin.K.L member Sung Yu-ri; and Tae-hyuk, played by Lee Wan from “In-soon is Pretty” (2007). The three share the same goal of turning their city on Jeju into a global metropolis, but also follow their individual dreams and goals.

Jung-woo grew up a poor orphan until he saves the life of the rich Jang Min-ho. He offers to serve him and his son, Tae-hyuk, and life improves, with Jung-woo and Tae-Hyuk becoming friends. But Tae-hyuk soon becomes too demanding and Jung-woo eventually ends up in jail for something Tae-Hyuk did.

It is a drama full of love, passion, exotic locations and revenge as the three begin to journey towards their individual goals: Jung-woo wishes for success and family, Su-hyun hopes to become a famous show director, and Tae-hyuk has his love for Su-hyun, said Kang Chul-hwa in a recent interview with The Korea Times. Kang is the author of the novel the series is based off.

“The book was inspired by a love story I heard during my visit to Jeju Island. I traveled to the island about 120 times, and then Africa, and then casinos to finish the book,” Kang said in a press statement.

Along with various locations, the drama also showcases the Canadian circus troupe, Cirque de Soleil. This is the first time the troupe has allowed a Korean drama to film behind the scenes and backstage.

The show airs every Wednesday on SBS and will soon be available for global viewers with English subtitles online on popular K-drama sites.
