In another example of the Korean Wave making a splash in the U.S., popular Korean girl group, the Wonder Girls, has been enjoying a warm reception from fans while touring with The Jonas Brothers.
Reports from fans and press in the U.S. and Korea have said that concert attendees appear to enjoy the performance, even participating in learning the moves to the group’s widely popular song “Nobody.” They have also performed an English version of last year’s hit “Tell Me.”
The girls were originally schedule to perform at 13 out of 45 cities on the tour throughout Canada and the U.S., but have since been requested to stay on for the whole tour, which will reach a reported 1.5 million fans in America. They even performed for Michelle Obama and her daughters at the Washington D.C. show, who are now reported to be fans of the group.
It’s still too early for music critics to say if the Wonder Girls will have substantial success in the U.S. Past examples have shown that it’s difficult for foreign acts to break through the Billboard charts, but from the response so far on Youtube and online, it seems as though the girls are off to a good start.
Of course, with a combination of their fun, bubbly music, cute dance style and great English skills, it would seem that they have what it takes to make it in the English market. But even if they don’t, they still have a huge fan base in Korea to return to, most of which are happy the girls are making it across the ocean.
The Wondergirls are also scheduled to make an appearance on the Wendy Williams Show on July 20th on BET!
The English version of “Nobody,” along with their album “The Wonder Years” and their hits “Tell Me” and “So Hot,” are now available for download on iTunes in the U.S.
