I’m sure many of the people who are familiar in the Asian drama scene are aware of Boys Over Flowers aka Hana Yori Dango aka Meteor Garden. When a drama has three different names, I believe that’s a sign it shouldn’t be remade anymore. [hidepost]
Now there is a new title for this drama once again. The Chinese have decided called it Meteor Shower and instead of the delicious quartet of boys called Flower 4 (F4) there is now the mediocre bunch of kids called Hot 4 (H4). Really? I thought creator of the series, Yoko Kamio, made it very clear that these four guys must be delicious, hot, and classy. As many manga and anime fans know, the series originated as a manga called Hana Yori Dango, which was created by Yoko Kamio. The series centers around high school student Makino Tskushi. Makino is a working class girl who attends an elite school by the name of Eitoku Academy. Makino is known as the “weed” of the school surrounded by “flowers” also known as Flower 4 (F4). F4 is comprises of four boys who are heirs to the most influential families in Japan. Over the course of the series, Makino gets to know the members of F4 in which she creates friendships, enemies, and love.
As mentioned before, this manga series has been remade into a drama three times, the Chinese one being the fourth. The drama was first attempted by the Taiwanese. This drama became such a hit, Meteor Rain and Meteor Garden II were created. In Japan, Hana Yori Dango was created. This drama starred Mao Inoue as Makino Tskushi and Matsumoto Jun (member of boy band Arashi) as Tsukasa Domyoji. This drama was also a such a hit, a sequal and a movie were created. Finally, Boys Over Flowers was created in South Korea and was aired this past March. This drama was also successful with the actors receiving many endorsement offers, projects, and more.
With all this said, why would anyone in their right mind want to create another drama about the same thing? I’m sure after three times we understand what the plot is. China, you can quit while you’re ahead. Please.
