Romeo x Juliet is a TV anime series that debuted in Japan in 2007 and was picked up by Funimation Entertainment in 2009. The story for Romeo x Juliet is based loosely upon one of William Shakespeare’s most well known and beloved dramas, Romeo & Juliet. [hidepost] The series frequently references Shakespeare’s other works of literature. The series is only twenty-four episodes long, and is a fantastic story that shows the power of true love.
The story takes place in a ravaged Neo Verona where the Montague family rules with an iron fist. The family took control from the peaceful rule of the Capulet family fourteen years before the start of the series. It is believed that all members of the Capulet family were killed during the night of Montague’s mutiny. However, two-year-old Juliet, the daughter of the ruling Capulet was able to escape the palace without being harmed and was forced to start life anew under her guardians as the peasant boy Odin within the city walls.
Before they even meet, Romeo and Juliet are united in their protest of Emperor Leontes Montague. Juliet helps the peasants in a Robin Hood-esc fashion, disguised as the hero the Red Whirlwind, while Romeo protests his father’s brutality from within the royal family. Romeo and Juliet have a chance encounter at the Rose Ball, and fall in love at first. However, once Juliet turns sixteen and learns of her true identity, her heart is split in two as she is forced to choose between fighting for the memory of her family and her rightful place at the throne of a peaceful Neo Verona, and fighting for her true love and her mortal enemy. Triumph or tragedy…only fate knows what is in store for Romeo and Juliet.
The voice of Juliet Capulet in the original Japanese version is spoken by Fumie Mizusawa who has previously worked on series such as: Eureka 7 (Gidget, Linck), Witchblade (Nanako), and Fate/stay night (Ayako Mitsuzuri). In the English dubbing, Juliet is voiced by Brina Palencia whose previous works include: Black Cat (Eve), Fullmetal Alchemist (Nina Tucker), and Ouran High School Host Club (Shiro Takaoji).
